Employment Law Note: U.S. Department of Labor Issues FMLA Guide for Employers
The Family and Medical Leave Act provides eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of leave per year and, except in specified circumstances, guarantees employees reinstatement to their same or equivalent position upon return from leave. As anyone who has dealt with the Act is well aware, the FMLA is complex to administer and can be confusing both to employers and employees alike. In an effort to offer compliance assistance, the U.S. Department of Labor from time to time issues guidance addressing and clarifying appropriate application of the FMLA.

In one such recent effort, the DOL issued "Need Time? The Employee's Guide to the Family and Medical Leave Act", a 16-page guide answering common FMLA questions and clarifying who can take FMLA leave and what protections the FMLA provides.

The Labor & Employment Law Year in Review for 2011 is now available. This booklet details all of the labor law changes and decisions affecting Washington State for 2011. If you have not yet received your copy of the latest Year in Review please let me know and I'll send you your complimentary copy.

What Do You Owe Job Candidates?
Employers may feel that they don't have to pay much attention to the candidate experience; it's a buyer's market, after all. But this is short-sighted because your best candidates have options and will turn elsewhere. It's also pretty unkind to people who have expressed an interest in working for you.

Here are five things that every employer owes to the people applying to work for your organization.

Survey
Despite high unemployment, many companies are finding it increasingly difficult to hire and retain the best and brightest skilled employees for their organizations. Today, I would like to ask for your help in evaluating how our company can better address these challenges in the future.

We have asked Haley Marketing Group, a consulting services agency that specializes in the staffing industry, to process the completed surveys, tabulate the responses, interpret the results, and report back to us on their findings.

Your participation will help us to better serve your needs. The link below will take you to the survey. Please be assured that your responses will be kept completely confidential.

I realize your time is extremely valuable. With respect for your time, we have kept the survey very brief. And given the significance of the challenges associated with hiring, the small investment you make today will help ensure the best future service for your business. Thank you for your consideration.
